Deliver hot takeaway food rather than parcels? That's rated as a different risk. See our fast food delivery insurance instead.
Hire and reward, in plain English
Courier insurance is a specialist commercial vehicle policy for anyone transporting goods for hire and reward: in other words, being paid to deliver things that aren't yours. Standard car and van policies exclude that use entirely. Deliver on one anyway and your insurance is void: any claim will be rejected, and you're driving illegally.
This applies whoever you deliver for. Amazon Flex, DPD, Yodel, DHL, lifestyle couriers and fully independent operators all count as hire and reward in an insurer's eyes. If you're picking up parcels and making multiple drops for payment, this is the policy you need.
What the policy includes
Our courier policies come with windscreen cover with an excess from £50, a motor excess from £250, uninsured loss recovery, and a 24-hour claims service, because a courier off the road isn't earning. Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes get free EU cover for up to 90 days, useful if your routes ever cross the Channel.
Remember that courier insurance covers the vehicle, not the cargo. To protect the parcels themselves you'll want goods in transit cover, and depending on how you operate, public liability, employer's liability and breakdown cover are all available as optional extras; we'll tell you which are actually worth having for your setup.
Convictions, claims, short-term work: all quotable
We arrange cover for drivers aged 23 and above, including those with motoring convictions, claims and accidents on their record: we work with specialist insurers who accept higher-risk profiles rather than auto-declining them.
You don't have to commit to a year either. If you're trialling delivery work or covering a busy season, 30-day short-term policies are available; if you're in it for the long haul, annual cover can be spread across monthly instalments.

See all FAQsWhat is courier insurance?
A specialist commercial policy covering you while you pick up goods and make deliveries for hire and reward. Standard car or van insurance excludes this type of work, so without courier cover any claim would be rejected and you'd be driving uninsured. Call 01323 416706 for a quote.
Do I need courier insurance for Amazon Flex or DPD?
Yes. If you deliver for Amazon, DPD, Yodel, DHL or any similar service, insurers class the work as hire and reward; standard car insurance won't cover you and your policy could be voided. The same applies to independent and lifestyle couriers.
Can I get courier insurance with convictions?
Yes. We cover drivers with motoring convictions, claims history and accidents by placing them with specialist insurers who accept higher-risk profiles. Call 01323 416706 and tell us your circumstances, no judgment.
What's the difference between courier insurance and goods in transit?
Courier insurance covers your vehicle while you make deliveries. Goods in transit insurance covers the cargo itself against damage, loss or theft. They're separate policies, and you need both to be fully protected; we arrange both.
Can I pay monthly, or get cover for a short period?
Both. Annual policies can be spread across monthly instalments, and 30-day short-term policies are available if you only need temporary cover, for seasonal work, or to trial delivery driving before committing.
I deliver takeaway food. Is this the right policy?
No, hot food delivery is rated differently from parcel work. Our fast food delivery insurance covers Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat and in-house takeaway drivers on mopeds, scooters, cars and small vans. Call 01323 416706 and we'll point you to the right one.
